Urban Screen Proposal

Urban Screen Proposal
Sigi Torinus, Andrea Sunder-Plassmann & Brent Lee

Proposed work: browsing beauty

browsing beauty is a site-sensitive projection-based video installation. Images, sounds and spatial concepts are developed according to each context: architectural, cultural, social, atmospheric and aesthetic. Each event is individualized, using part of a large database of image and sound collected throughout the years for each show and in various contexts. For Urban Screen we intend to generate additional video that reflects the specificity of the site (recreation centre and preschool playground) and adapt our database of circular video to fit into the architectural frame that includes windows (see image above).

browsing beauty is an ongoing multi-media installation project investigating the ephemeral and random nature of beauty as well as its culturally – bound notions. browsing beauty is nomadic in its nature and calls for light travel; it is usually presented as a sound environment and multilayered projections on buildings, giant spheres or other surfaces.

Information about the team:

Sigi Torinus
creates new media works that include site-specific installation and improvisatory interactive live-video performance. Her work explores our perceptions of the migratory journey, through time and space, in physical, ephemeral and digital worlds. Her art returns time and again to the themes of origin, departure, navigation and destination. She holds an MFA from the Braunschweig Art Institute, Germany, and San Francisco State University in California. She is a co-founder of the Noiseborder Ensemble and teaches in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada.

Andrea Sunder-Plassmann
lives in Berlin, Germany and works with photography, film/ video and installations. A pioneer of the early experimental and multidisciplinary art scene of Berlin in the 1980s, Andrea’s work combined performance with photography, Super8 and 16mm film. From there, she began creating both temporary and site-specific installations that explore the synergies between object and environment and the impact of the viewer as an element in the work. Using photography to examine time, light and space, Andrea’s work examined both perception and human nature.

Brent Lee
is a composer, media artist, and musician whose work explores the relationships between sound, image, and technology, especially through multimedia performance. He has created more than one hundred works, ranging from orchestral music to interactive media pieces to film soundtracks. His most recent project is entitled Homstal, a set of multimedia pieces featuring saxophone improvisation in an interactive audiovisual environment. He is a co-founder of the Noiseborder Ensemble and the Electric Improv Lab, and teaches in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada.
